SMITH MIDDLE SCHOOL MORNING ANNOUNCEMENTS

Monday, March 15

Attention Smith students:

First of all, congratulations on winning the spirit award for the Relay For Life Charity Basketball Game. Smith was clearly the overall winner and for your efforts, the TFEE is awarding us $100 in itunes gift cards. We were not sure how to divide this up and who should be entered in the drawing. It was suggested that anyone that bought a t-shirt should be entered.
As of now, you have a 1 in 25 chance of winning a $20 gift card. Some students suggested that we give you another opportunity to buy a shirt so you could be in the drawing. T-shirts are still available in Mrs. Casko’s room for $6.
If you would like to be entered in the itunes gift card drawing, please make sure you buy a shirt before Wednesday of next week. We will hold the drawing live on the announcements next Wednesday.

Relay For Life Volunteers needed!

Smith Media Center has won a Scholastic Sweepstakes (Care Where you Are) which allows us to give away 500 brand new books (preschool- high school level) to children in need from our Troy community. The books arrived here yesterday and they are very nice. Retail value to be $4000 or more.

HAPPY 30TH BIRTHDAY MR. PYKE

International Club has just started meeting this month. Our goal is to celebrate the many cultures we represent at Smith. Several major holidays have already gone by this school year, such as the Ramadan and Eid-al-Fitr celebrated by the Muslin community, a Hindu holiday of Navarati, and Guru Nanak’s birthday celebrated by the Sikh, in addition to our American favorite, Thanksgiving. We hope all our communities enjoyed their celebrations.

December is more than Santa Claus, Christmas trees, and candy canes. For millions of people throughout the world, this month also means the arrival of Hannukah celebrated by the Jewish community and Kwanzaa, a relatively new but increasingly popular holiday celebrated by the African-American community. All three holidays, Hannukah, Kwanzaa, and Christmas, are joyous occasions for family and friends to gather and celebrate. We’d like to take this opportunity to wish everyone happy holidays. Happy New Year to all!

Dear Mr. Manderfield,

I'm not sure if you remember me, but my name is Rebecca Tincknell and I played volleyball for you at Smith in 8th grade back in 2003. I then continued playing volleyball at Troy High School where I was a member of the Varsity volleyball team for 2 years and graduated with All-State Honorable Mention honors in 2007. Currently, I am a junior at Adrian College where I am a co-captain of the varsity volleyball team. I am majoring in Mathematics for Secondary Education and a minor in Physical Education with the hopes of becoming a Math teacher and volleyball coach.

This summer I got invited to play on the USA Athletes International Volleyball Team to travel to Scotland in May of 2010 to compete in the 2010 Scottish Open Volleyball Tournament. This is very exciting for me and a huge honor because playing volleyball overseas has always been a dream of mine, and now the opportunity is in my hands. However, in order to fulfill this dream, I must first fund raise the expenses for my trip.

This is where I am asking for your help as the coach of the 8th grade volleyball team. I am running a 3-day volleyball clinic December 28th, 29th, and 30th in Troy for middle school girls in order to prepare them for their season this January. The girls will be focusing on all aspects of volleyball such as setting, passing, attacking and serving. All net profit for this clinic will be used to off set fees towards my trip to Scotland this May to further my volleyball career.

If you would please inform past or future volleyball players at Smith of this opportunity I would greatly appreciate it! Attatched is a flyer with all necessary information on the clinic. If it is easier for you to email me a roster of past or future players at Smith, I can contact them myself to inform them of this opportunity as well.

Thank you and I greatly appreciate your help! Go Knights!

Rebecca Tincknell

A group of Smith 7th graders have been selected by NASA to test their experiment design in a microgravity environment. The project, called WING (What If No Gravity), is an offshoot of a high school project run for several years. This is the first year the competition has been open to middle schoolers.

Seven students chose to research and design an experiment to show the effects of microgravity on magnetic attraction. Their proposal was sent to NASA in early November. On December 14th NASA notified their teacher, Ms. McCormick, of their acceptance of the students’ proposal, allowing them to move forward with the experiment.

The group will now work out the bugs of the design, build a prototype, and test it in Earth’s gravity field before tweaking the final experiment to send to Glenn Research Center in Cleveland. NASA workers at GRC will conduct the experiment in an 80 foot drop tower, simulating 2.2 seconds of microgravity. The experiment will be videotaped and results returned to the group.

Congratulations go to group members:

FOOTBALL: The Smith Knights heavyweight football team played their final game under the lights last week at Troy High School. Although we spotted the Boulan Broncos a 16 point lead at halftime, our Knights mounted a great comeback to tie the score at 16 points each. The knights finished the season with a record of 4-1-1, and were city champs for the second year in a row! Scoring for the knights were: Malik Shipp, Jeremy Fox, and Danny Wunderlich. Remember that the team sports pizza party is today, two dollars is required. Have rides ready for home at 3:45.

FOOTBALL: The lightweight football team played their last game on Thursday night against Boulan. They lost 28-14. It was a hard fought battle and the Knights never gave up. The score at half was 20-0. This showed the determination of this team and we are very proud of their efforts.
