Administration
Mr. Ryan Brinks (Principal)

Ryan Brinks began serving as the Principal at the International Academy’s East campus in 2013. Prior to joining the IA, Mr. Brinks taught Mathematics at Clawson High School.
Mr. Brinks graduated from Hope College with a Bachelor of Arts degree in social studies and mathematics. He earned a Master of Arts degree in Mathematics Education at Eastern Michigan University and his Education Specialist degree in Educational Leadership at Saginaw Valley State University.
A major focus for Mr. Brinks continues to be on improving teaching and learning in the classroom. He has many years of experience leading school improvement teams, delivering professional development, integrating technology into the classroom, and serving as an instructional coach to improve classroom instruction and student achievement.
Before joining the IA, Mr. Brinks served as a FIRST robotics mentor for several years. He believes in the importance of applying classroom knowledge to solve real-world problems and continues to encourage students to take advantage of the IA’s many clubs and enrichments.
Mrs. Cassandra Conaton (Assistant Principal)

Casey Conaton is Smith’s Middle School Assistant Principal. She has worked as an administrator in the Troy School District since 2018. She began her teaching career with the Center Line School District as an elementary music teacher. She has also taught performing arts at the International Academy of Macomb and Center Line High School. She has worked as a building administrator at both the middle and high school level. She is excited to work with the Smith staff and community – supporting however she can. Mrs. Conaton is looking forward bringing her experience with Restorative Practices and Student Well-Being to Smith Middle school and is looking forward to creating a safe, caring, and responsive environment to the Smith community.

Mission, Vision & Goals
Mission
The purpose of Smith Middle School is to ensure learning for all members of our school community.
Vision
Smith will be a safe environment where diversity is embraced, and the needs of the whole child are met through innovation and collaboration. With the resources available, the Smith community will strive to provide an engaging, challenging academic experience, while promoting a balance between emotional, academic, and social needs, contributing to the success of all students.
SMS Goals:
- · All students will show growth in their ability to collect, organize, and analyze data as measured by the SEPUP science rubric.
- · All students will demonstrate growth in their ability to source and analyze a document as measured by the social studies rubric for document-based questions.
- · All students from Tier II Math Connections will show growth in their ability to make sense of problems and persevere in solving them as measured by the Tier II diagnostic interview.
