Pay to Participate Q & A Information:
Q: How does pay to participate work?
A: The Troy School District will continue the “Pay to Participate” program for athletics, clubs and intramural activities for the 2018-19 school year. The district will assess a fee to those students participating in interscholastic athletics (Grade 7-12). In addition, a separate fee will be assessed to students (Grade 6-12) who participate in intramural and/or club activities.
Q: I am confused by the pay to participate form. Can you help me clarify?
A: There are three reasons why you would pay to participate:
- If your child is on a sports team (At MS level 7th or 8th grade w/tryouts OR At HS level 9th-12 grade w/tryouts)
- If your child is on an intramural team and/or
- In a club/activity. This is a one-time fee, per student, per school year.
Q: I see the fee structure, but I am still confused. Can you please explain?
HIGH SCHOOL ATHLETIC INTERSCHOLASTIC SPORTS:
A: The fee for an interscholastic HIGH SCHOOL SPORT (ie, football, basketball, etc.) is $175 per sport, per student, per year for sport one and “another” $175 per sport, per student, per year for sport two. Additional sports (after paying a total of $350 per student) are NO charge. If your child plays Football in the fall and Basketball in the winter, the cost will be $175 for each sport.
MIDDLE SCHOOL ATHLETIC INTERSCHOLASTIC SPORTS:
A: The fee for an interscholastic MIDDLE SCHOOL SPORT (ie, football, basketball, etc.) is $75 per sport, per student, per year for sport one and “another” $75 per sport, per student, per year for sport two. Additional sports (after paying a total of $150 per student) are NO charge. If your child plays Football in the fall and Basketball in the winter, the cost will be $75 for each sport.
- 1st sport: $75
- 2nd sport: $75
- 3rd or more sport: No Charge
HIGH SCHOOL AND MIDDLE SCHOOL:
A: The fee for a club/intramural in high school AND middle school (ie, chess club, debate club, flag football, IM cross country, wrestling, etc.) is $50 per club/intramural, per student, per school year. This is one-time fee. If your child participates in IM flag football in the fall and IM Basketball in the winter, you will only pay $50 once.
Q: Can you give me an example of a child who participates in both interscholastic sports and a club/intramural?
A: Your child is a 7th grader. They decide to play football in the fall. The fee would be $75. Your child decides to do intramural wrestling in the winter. The fee would be $50. Assuming this is your only child and they are not participating in any other sport, club/intramural, the total would be $125 for the year.
A: Your child is a 10th grader. They decide to participate in the chess club and play basketball in the winter. The fee would be $50 for the chess club and $175 for basketball in the winter. Assuming this is your only child and they are not participating in any other sport, club/intramural, the total would be $225 for the year.
A: Your child is an 8th grader. They decide to participate in student council, play basketball in the winter, and participate in Science Olympiad. Since student council is considered a service club, the fee would be $0 for student council, and $75 for basketball in the winter. The Science Olympiad fee is separate from the TSD pay to participate program, therefore, it depends on what the fee is set at by the program based on the experimenting/competitions, etc.
