Mission:
The purpose of Smith Middle school is to ensure that all members of the school community reach their highest learning potential in a safe and supportive environment.
Core Values:
Respect, Responsibility, Perseverance, and Compassion
Why Become a School of Character?
Our school believes in providing a safe and supportive learning environment for all students and staff. In 2018, Smith reflected on our PBS practices and U-knighted program and set sights on where we could continue to grow. It became evident that character education was the foundation of everything we were trying to create. In 2019, Smith initiated the process toward becoming a State School of Character by Character.org. We now use the 11 Principles Framework to guide our practices and character education. Monthly Knights+ meetings now focus on deepening the understanding of our core values of respect, responsibility, perseverance, and compassion.
Benefits
- Creates a positive and safe learning environment
- Fosters relationships and trust between students, staff, and community members
- Creates consistency and a common language among learning community members
- Builds a solid foundation for teachers to deliver best practice instruction in literacy, math, science, and social studies

Protfolio Selections
PORTFOLIO SECTIONS
Students will have six pages in their portfolios:
Math
Science
Social Studies
English
Electives
APT (Apt to Succeed)
CONTENT
Each page will house all artifacts and reflections from 6th grade through 8th grade. The artifacts that remain at the time of the 8th grade interview will be the students' best work . Each student should have at least 4 artifacts for each of the 5 categories. It is beneficial to have artifacts from 6th, 7th, and 8th grade to show growth throughout their middle school career.
Grade Responsibilities
6TH GRADE
- Communicate with student what our portfolio requirements and expectations are at Smith
- Communicate with students when they are doing authentic work that is portfolio worthy.
- Allow students time to reflect on assignments using the reflection format. Refer to 40 reflections under the "Reflection Tab."
- Direct students to save artifacts and reflections using their iPad or computer lab to save in their Schoology resources, google docs, Microsoft Office 365, or school network folder.
7TH GRADE
- Communicate with students when they are doing authentic work that is portfolio worthy.
- Allow students time to reflect on assignments using the reflection format. Refer to 40 reflections under the "Reflection Tab."
- In digital apps, students will put together their Weebly page. They will upload at least 1 artifact from 6th grade and at least 2 artifacts from 7th grade.
- Allow time in content areas to update Weebly pages during 4th quarter (optional).
8TH GRADE
- Communicate with students when they are doing authentic work that is portfolio worthy.
- Allow students time to reflect on assignments using the reflection format. Refer to 40 reflections under the "Reflection Tab."
- Allow time in content areas to update Weebly pages during the end of 2nd quarter or beginning of 3rd quarter.
- English teachers will prepare students for the interview process.
- English teachers will allow time for final revision of the Weebly portfolio during 3rd quarter.
Weebly Examples
Reflection
Each artifact will be accompanied by a reflection. Feel free to teach reflective writing in your classroom for your artifacts, however, here is a suggested format for all content areas.
Students could reflect on one of the four main topics (Backward-Looking, Inward-Looking, Outward-Looking, or Forward-Looking) by answering several of the questions posed in one area. OR
Students could reflect on each of the four main topics by answering one or two questions from each area. Here are some examples:
Reflections should NOT talk about how hard they worked, or that they received an A. This is an example of what not to do:
Authentic Work
In the past, our students have put in assignments like Scantron tests or other artifacts that have not showed their work or thought. The portfolio committee is not saying don't do these types of assignments, but when you do assignments in class that are more authentic, our job is to communicate with students that this assignment would work for a portfolio and provide time to reflect.
We should focus student portfolio work on quality not quantity. Keep in mind that students will be required to come up with at least 4 artifacts from each content area. A typical portfolio might have one 6th grade assignment, one 7th grade assignment, and two 8th grade assignments.
